What is the Best Acne Treatment Available?

Acne is a complex issue and there are a lot of factors that come into play when prescribing treatments. It does not affect a certain race of people or a certain kind of person. It does not affect just women and it is not limited to just teens. Anyone can get acne and everybody is different.

With that said, there is not one specific product or medication that can get rid of everyone's acne. Since we are all different, our bodies respond to different medications. What works for this person may not work for that person.

Have you ever tried an acne treatment or program that worked for someone else but made your skin dry and irritated? That probably happened because one solution in the product does not work for your skin type.

Doctors take this into consideration when they are prescribing treatments or referring an over-the-counter medication.

Lets look at the most commonly known best acne treatments.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl Peroxide continues to be the most prescribed treatment today. It is usually very successful in combatting acne and can be found in most OTC products. You do not need a prescription to get products with benzoyl peroxide in them. It works by introducing oxygen into the pore and it cleanses the pores of dead skin cells.

The side effects of benzoyl peroxide are dryness, flakiness, and sometimes burning.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is another popular treatment. Generally, you do not need a written prescription to use this product. Sometimes, though when acne is severe a doctor may prescribe medication with a higher strength. It works by unclogging pores to allow the pimple to shrink. It also reduces swelling and redness associated with acne.

Side effects can include irritation or stinging. More serious side effects may include dizziness, headache, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and even hearing loss.

Tretinoin, or Retin A

This treatment is derived from Vitamin A and works by allowing the skin cells to shed and unclogging the pore. It can also prevent the formation of new pimples. Results sometimes take 6-9 weeks to show.

The side effects of using Retin-A are usually dryness and irritation.

Accutane is not as common as the first 3 because it is prescribed when other treatment does not work. This is a powerful drug and should be used for severe acne. It can take nearly 4-5 months to see any results, but it can be safer than long-term use of other products.

Side effects of accutane include dry skin and itching, irritated eye lids, hair thinning, and increased sensitivity to the sun.

These are the most common treatments available today. To say one is better over the other is up to each individual. If you find one does not work, keep trying until you find the product that best suits your individual needs.
