Just about everyone gets acne at some point in their life. Most of us experience acne when going through puberty. The problem is people get acne at different times and to different levels of severity. As a high school kid it can cause a lot of frustration and embarrassment. Even though acne is just part of life nobody wants to look in the mirror and see a pimple on their face. When you get acne as an adult it makes you feel like your in high school again. As an adult this can be more frustrating then when you were in high school.
Causes of Acne
In acne, dead skin cells and sebum clog the follicular canal and produce a comedo (koh-me-doh, plural = comedones). Causes of Acne vary because everyone is different. In most cases you do not get acne from eating chocolate or greasy foods. If you want to prove this to yourself keep a food diary to work out if you are one of the few people whose acne gets worse if they eat certain things. People get acne to varying degrees. If you can get rid of your acne with over the counter medicine that is great. If you have more severe acne you should consult a dermatologist. We will discuss different levels of acne and some treatments.
First up are product and treatment options for those of you with mild acne vulgaris. With literally THOUSANDS of acne treatment options it can be a bit confusing trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. Generally, mild acne is treated with topical products, including topical retinoids, antimicrobials (benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, or erythromycin), salicylic acid or azelaic acid. Benzoyl peroxide lotion or gel are the most effective acne treatment you can get without a prescription. Products with benzoyl peroxide (say: ben-zoil peh-rok-side) or salicylic (say: sal-uh-sil-ick) acid in them are usually pretty helpful for treating acne. Benzoyl peroxide blasts your pores with oxygen, killing acne-causing bacteria and clearing your pores of cellular debris.
Moderate acne can be managed with topical retinoids in combination with oral antibiotics and possibly benzoyl peroxide. You should consult a doctor before taking any medication.
Part of the problem is that acne itself can lead to a range of depressive symptoms, especially in severe cases. For severe cases of acne, your physician may choose to start directly with oral retinoids to minimize scarring from acne. In severe cases of acne the eruptions will run deep into the epithelial layer of the body leaving a scar once it has healed.
Boys usually have more severe cases while many girls experience intermittent acne tied to their monthly menstrual cycle.
